So, I got the 08-09 Autumn/Winter Pret-a-Porter GAPPRESS magazine today.
What popped out at me immediately was this set by Tamae Hirokawa called "Mythical Tale of an Icy Land". The text in english about it talks about using "new technology" but it doesn't say what. The icy looking embellishments look very much like the August maiko kanzashi. ... I wonder if it's the same, either way I'm curious about her technique! I couldn't find ANY information about this designer online. What a pity.

Technique speculation welcome!
withinity found this video of the collection, if you watch the very end of it, you can see the ice maidens in movement.

time to go pass out now!

I did some googling in Japanese and still couldn't find that information, but I did find that Tamae Hirokawa (玉枝広川) is involved with the label Somarta (ソマルタ). They have some very nice pics of her work here:

It looks like layered, holographic plastics. However they did it, it's really cool!

It kind of reminds me of when I was a little girl at Powel Symphony Hall in St. Louis on a tour and they were bragging about how the chandeliers were all made from austrian crystal. A chunk fell off and hit me in the head(no one saw because I was in the back), so I pocketed it. At home I came to the startling realization that it was in fact... plastic. and of the same quality as my she-ra doll's crown thing.

I got no idea on how those were made tho. X3 I wonder if you could achieve that effect by knitting or crocheting long drop beads of various sizes into a wrap.
