I love Gene Kelly
Feb. 6th, 2008 05:18 pmI love Gene Kelly.
How did I not previously realize this.
I wish I could have met him while he was alive.
Please to be telling me your favorite Gene Kelly musicals.
(I've obviously seen Singing in the Rain.)
Lately, it's like I find one thing,... and that leads to something else and then that opens a whole pandora's box of awesome. I love researching stuff. I've found some badass swingdancing stuff lately. I'm so inspired!

Xanadu is a guilty pleasure, and certainly not Kelly's finest performance, but hey, it has Olivia Newton-John on go-go rollerskates. (It also features a completely forgettable performance by the main male character, who is supposed to be the rising young whippersnapper that gets the aging Kelly to dance once again.)

Date: 2008-02-07 02:24 am (UTC)Everyone is saying Singin' in the Rain, but that's because it's his best.
Here's a random video of him dancing on roller skates from another movie, be careful, you may spontaneously swoon at 2:20:

Date: 2008-02-07 03:59 am (UTC)Anchors Aweigh - the real gem for this movie is his dance routine with Jerry the Mouse. He costars with Frank Sinatra.
On the Town - this was originally a Broadway musical about three sailors on one day of leave in New York. It's so adorable.
The Pirate - this was the favor Gene Kelly did for Judy Garland at the end of the career. This is so classic in film history. One of the most notable scenes was cut from theatres - Gene Kelly dancing with the Nicholas Bros - two black dancers.
Of course, Singin in the Rain and An American in Paris like everyone said.
There's also several dance sequences that are totally fabulous: Each of his films features an experimental dance. One on roller skates; one with newspaper, a creaky board and steps; one with Fred Astaire; one with his reflection; one on a construction site.
I really hope you find all these - they're all superb! Don't forget that Turner Classic Movies is holding their annual 31 Days of Oscar festival - lots of good movies are on all the time!

Date: 2008-02-07 05:33 am (UTC)An American in Paris is really something.
Date: 2008-02-07 06:59 am (UTC)My favorite scene from childhood is Kelly and Caron bouncing up and down by the fountain at the end of the song.
On the Town... great music. Classic songs. Just fun and up beat!
They this on location in New York City!
Anchors Away...Gene Kelly
Dances with Cartoon Jerry Mouse..Fun.
Brigadoon. Low budget shot on sound stage but I love the music.
Summer Stock. Judy Garland is just great.
Cover Girl with Rita Hayworth. Lovely music although it's not Rita singing. Love the song.. "Long ago and far away".
Words and Music..a long musical number..Slaughter on 10th Ave. Its worth it to see that dance.
There are a bunch of others. Wonderful gems.
The one I want to see..is a French Movie. 1967.
Young Girls of Rochefort or
Les Demoiselles de Rochefort.

Date: 2008-02-07 07:28 am (UTC)sorry haven't replied to your question, getting over hand surgery. As for songs, each one is different no matter what the date. And if you want to hear some of the James Intveld songs, I should be well enough to get some on Vox this weekend.
hope you are having fun on PG, the Valentine's stuff is awesome!!

Date: 2008-02-07 08:16 pm (UTC)he was at my college graduation (he got an honorary doctorate) and although he didn't speak at the graduation, he walked RIGHT PAST ME and I got to shake his hand and say hello. I mean... that was it but... MAN, I was all "zomg I love you I LOVE YOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU" although I did keep it together and just thanked him for coming and said hello.
There is an awfully cute one where he dances with Jerry the Mouse, too. And oh man there is some 4 musketeers thing that is delightfully cheesy, if memory serves... hm.
Gene Kelly. He rocked.

Date: 2008-02-07 08:17 pm (UTC)Gene Kelly was a dancing GENIUS 8D! His athleticism, skill, and choreography are unmatched still! His dance routine in Singing in the Rain was brilliant! I can't believe he planned every single puddle for that scene X)!

Date: 2008-02-08 07:30 am (UTC)Cover Girl-- I love the dancing and Rita Hayworth is beautiful in it.
For Me and My Gal-- it's his first movie and Judy Garland is really the star, but it has a great, weepy storyline, lots of good song and dance sequences, and it's directed by Busby Berkeley, who is awesome in his own right.
