tomorrow is Mitch and my 5th! :)
also attempted to make dashi stock I was very amused by the big long peice of dried seaweed. I can truely say that I have never cooked with anything like it. Mitch is from Ohio, btw. They don't have fish flakes there. (I think I did ok on the stock, it smelled and tasted right to me... but I'm not sure about the application... I used it to make year end noodles but it seemed way too soy-sauce-y to me, even though I used more daishi than the recipe said (and less soy sauce).)

... I really want to sew pretty things... must sew pretties soon.
.... I had the sudden-urge-to-fanart-atttack (forgive the primitive coloring please):

Great drawing! I'm glad that we're not the only ones celebrating omisoka this year. We're going to eat our soba and then go to the Buddhist temple that is a few blocks from us for the bell ringing. I'm making ozoni for out breakfast the next day, but then have to have a traditional Southern New Year's Day meal with my mom, which consists of black-eyed peas, greens and cornbread. It's very tasty, but doesn't go with the Japanese theme. ^^;

well, I'm practicing a little ahead of time so that I don't freak mitch out with bad food. haha.
I'm not sure how much we'll have, but I figure I can at least handle soba!

Minakawa's mom thought I was crazy to try to make daishi from scratch...so I just got the instant stuff she recommended. I think I'd make it from scratch just to try it and because that's my nature. For instance, I didn't even know there were cake mixes until my late teens! ^_^;

I got some instant mixes too, but it wasn't that hard to make it from scratch! and being that I know very little about any of it, I wanted to try it, like you said. :)

Congrats!!!

Yeah, we're having traditional soba noodles on New Years Eve. It's also traditional to eat sushi on New Years too, which we did last year.

Hope you have a happy new year! Good luck with the dashi (only one i, btw)!

My recollection is that dashi is a flavor-intensifier, so that might be why it tasted too soy sauce-y to you?

Happy New Year, Aimee! :) Happy belated anniv too. Congrats to you both!

Your Disgaea art here made me smile so much... I love how you've drawn the Prinnies!

ps. I saw the photo of Umeko in her kimono in your doll journal today and wanted to say how lovely she looked. The little tansu and new year decorations are so charming. They really make the photo seem complete. :)
