My David Austin Roses came in the mail today! They're actually quite large...! Most of my other mail-order roses were really small. I'm excited to see how well they grow. I'll plant them tomorrow because I DON'T HAVE TO WORK TOMORROW... YESSSSSSS.
The roses in the box: Jude the Obscure, Mortimer Sackler, cl. James Galway, cl. Eden and William Shakespeare 2000. <3

which is when they have some dirt around the roots in an enclosed small pot, and that pot is stapled inside a box to keep the rose from moving in transit.
But yeah! Basically, you're supposed to plant them quickly after getting them, the idea is that they are cheaper to ship without all that heavy dirt.
For -most people- roses go totally dormant in the cold months and look like this anyway (ie sticks with no leaves on top) and then they grow up all big in the spring and summer. so I guess that's why you can move their roots around easily while they are dormant? I'm still learning. :)
Yeah, and all the roses have names! Even roses you see on the side of the street, they all have names. I think it's cute. It helps though when you're talking about them with other people, instead of "it's a pink rose"... it has a specific name and rose-type, so people who know roses would know what it's tendencies are. There are all different types of roses that do well in different locations, have different plant shapes and habits, etc.

Date: 2010-01-30 04:15 pm (UTC)You can buy bare-root roses at lowes and stuff sometimes, too!
But I did a lot of research online and in books to find out what varieties would be best for this zone and stuff... and I wanted very specific colors and rose-style, so it's best to order online from reputable companies than buy some "normal rose" at lowe's. :) I doubt a nursery, lowes or home depot, etc,... would have had -any- of the varieties I wanted.
the nursery is always "Try iceberg!" (yes, I know! It's a tough little rose that's easy to grow! But I want something else!)
