Grandma's furniture
Jan. 15th, 2010 08:46 am
After much deliberation, Mitch and I decided to get my Grandmother's dining room set and a few other things from my parents. (my grandparents on my father's side, the Majors...) The furniture had to travel 3,000 miles across the USA to get to me.
I feel very lucky to have such a pretty set of furniture, .... ( so much furniture today is kinda crap, not made out of really nice wood like this.)... and also it's really nice to be able to use something that's been in my family for a long time. It gives me a sense of continuity even though I live so far away from where I grew up and my family is.
The Dining Room.
The furniture is actually a little lighter than it appears. It's mahogany. The general style of the furniture, to me,... reminds me of old Charleston houses. Makes me want to paint the room light teal or something colorful, entirely, like those old homes.

I AM going to paint this inset wall in chinoiserie-style (in teal), though.

The secretary
it -could- totally fit in the dining room, but I wanted to try it here.
Meemaw kept all her bills and letters in this secretary, she did all of it at this desk. It's funny how things change. Now we do all that on the computer. This beautiful thing was my grandmother's computer, you guys. She never had one... in fact, she couldn't understand a VCR.
(forgive me, I haven't had time to fully take down the Christmas decor yet.)

Also, she kept her only partially filled out wedding book in the secretary. It has a transparent cover on it that's grown brown over the years... she never removed it.

Meemaw and the Reverend's cake toppers and the keys to the china cabinet and secretary.
Made out of pipe-cleaners, you guys. And she loved them and kept them all that time. You don't need expensive stuff right? It's about the union of two people.

My grandmother loved tatting lace, camellias and roses and Wheel of Fortune. She lived a very long time. My grandfather was a Baptist preacher, a really highly educated and interesting man. He cast his own fishing lures and developed his own photos and could read Hebrew and Greek. He died just before I was born.
These were his sectional bookcases. I loved his study. I love how the glass fronts slide up and in.

the labels in the bookcases

my grandma probably rocked me in this chair. My mom made the cushions. This sat in my room for a long time when I was about high-school aged.
