As big a deal as they made it out to be, I'd expect Whovians to be ponding down the BBC doors to get more development out of the River story. And considering it seems like it is supposed to be such an important relationship to the Doctor, I'd hope they spent some time to do it right, and not just compress, like, a year into one episode.
I just got IQ, and I'm saving it for after I get caught up on live-action Dr. Who, so I haven't seen it yet. I get the impression that it's more youth-oriented. Hope it's decent.
I hope that they at least imply some things with River before Tennant leaves (because you know all good things eventually have to end.) I'd think after setting all that up... and considering that Moffat was the writer, and Moffat is taking over... that they'll at least get into it, some!
I'm actually pretty jazzed that they are willing to take it to that level. the whole "OMG you know my name" thing is pretty epic. and a lot of classic who fans are very against romantic stuff... but... you can't really get into the river thing without romance, right? MOffat, IMHO, is a lot of a romantic, too (if you look at a lot of his eps) so ... I'm curious to see what he'll do. (not nessesarily regarding river but just with the doctor in general). I mean Girl in the Fireplace and the Silence in the Library,.... and lots of others, they were pretty OMGANGST + hopeless romance...
It'll be interesting, too, to see how RTD transitions to Moffat's season with the specials in 2009. I'd say more but I don't want to spoil anything for your remaining 4th season eps! :)
apparently at the end of this month there's going to be a special ala Time Crash, too.
As a Who fan from back when Tom Baker was the Doctor, I was always of the opinion that, although he looks human, the Doctor is far too alien and vast to get involved romantically with a human. But I accept that the show is no longer the show it was twenty-five years ago, and the Tennant seasons with all their romance have been a good, entertaining TV show. So I accept the romance as part of the New Doctor Who, and I'm glad that it's been handled quite well.
So Moffatt is clearly of the romantic ilk, but I think he'll do a good job with it.

I can totally respect the way the old show was done, but I wonder, at some point, if they were doing it that way simply for the same reason that married couples had to have separate twin beds, you know?
The way I see it, the previous Doctors were so alien and had such vast intellects that they looked upon human beings almost like particularly interesting bugs. Tennant's Doctor, on the other hand, is like a much older man with lots of worldly experience and wisdom, who looks to his young ladies to reinvogorate his sense of wonder at the universe.
I don't mind the change, because the current version is a good show, and I'd rather watch a good show than a bad, but faihful, show. Also, I'm not as close to Dr. Who as I am to some of my fandoms. Now, if they start having Obi-Wan romancing women in the new Clone Wars series, I might start ranting... =D
I totally agree with you about past and present doctors and the motivation of Ten. (that's why I love Ten!) I'm so into the appreciating life and finding joy in it-type mentality right now that I find Ten's motivation very endearing.
it's so tiring having these immortal or impossibly old beings being jaded or remote. I think Ten is refreshing in that way. :) at the same time what you said about the older doctors makes total sense. at least they were able to write a good motivation and personality into the possibly forced prudishness of older tv.
