Assistant Director
May. 5th, 2008 07:19 pmHey ya'll!
Today was my first day back at Rough Draft since we finished up with the Futurama movies in the winter. I normally work as a Character Layout artist (which is kinda-sorta like a keyframe animator). I've also done some timing, storyboard revisions and character design.
but my new job is Assistant Director!!
(isn't that crazy?? This is my first time A.D.-ing ) I'm really excited about it. I hadn't wanted to say anything about it previously, because I never count my chickens. But YEAY! It's on a brand new animated show.
also, randomly, I drew a mermaid. I think I'd like to do some drawings for a self-published sketchbook for '08, but tell me honestly, if I post them on my journal, are you going to be less likely to buy a sketchbook? Would you rather they be a surprise and "new material" for the sketchbook? Lemme know what you think, huh?

Date: 2008-05-06 02:27 am (UTC)and I think on the sketch book you can show some images you'll include in the sketchbook and then keep some that are sketchbooks exclusives so that they know there will be material that has yet to be seen.

Date: 2008-05-06 02:27 am (UTC)I don't usually buy books, but I do enjoy seeing people's work because it does make me more likely to buy in order to have something physically in hand. Especially if there is a piece of art inside that I really like. If that makes sense.

Date: 2008-05-06 02:30 am (UTC)I'm opting out of the sketchbook question - I rarely buy sketchbooks because of the shipping cost to Australia. I love seeing your sketches though!
And congratulations on making A.D. :)

Date: 2008-05-06 02:32 am (UTC)Personally, I like when you post pictures. I guess you shouldn't post all of them, but I find that I'm more likely to buy a book when I've seen a bunch of the pictures than when it's all a surprise.

Date: 2008-05-06 02:49 am (UTC)also-- for me there's a difference between seeing art on the computer screen and actually getting a hard-copy of it in person... which is why I love artists sketchbook collections.

Date: 2008-05-06 03:30 am (UTC)Congratulations! A promotion is you!
I'd want a sketchbook regardless of whether they're posted online cos sometimes you want to thumb through something tactile. I regret not getting the one you did last summer. ;_;

Date: 2008-05-06 04:50 am (UTC)I'd buy the sketch-book if I liked the drawings. It wouldn't matter to me if I'd alredy seen them before the book was out. Maybe just show a couple as a preview?

Date: 2008-05-06 06:11 am (UTC)As far as a sketchbook goes, I don't think seeing them online would prevent me from buying it later. Are you going to have copies of Japan Ai at Fanime, by the way? I want mine signed by the author! XD

Date: 2008-05-06 06:16 am (UTC)I would do preview/teaser sketches but keep the majority of your work a surprise for the book.

Date: 2008-05-06 06:58 am (UTC)As for sketchbooks: previews of some of the content is great but don't give all the content away because who doesn't love to be surprised?

Date: 2008-05-06 03:32 pm (UTC)Re: Sketchbook & Posting Pictures
I'd buy your sketchbook. I love the way you draw and I'd like to have something tangible I can take with me places that don't have computers. Though, I would say to keep some things super-secret and post some. Each drawing you post is like a delicious cupcake-- we'd all suffer from sugar overload if you posted all your sketches at once. (Shoot, I'd eat the whole cake and then sone.) By posting some and publishing all, I believe you'd whet our pallet so we could savor all the delicious artwork.

Date: 2008-05-06 07:13 pm (UTC)Woohoo, congratulations 8D! As for a sketchbook, I'll buy one whether I see the drawings or not just because ;)!

Considering almost everyone here has already bought Japan Ai...
If anything, posting sketches up beforehand will help promote the sketchbook.
Will you be including your sketches of Futurama and Howl's Moving Castle characters? I especially love your renderings of Sophie and Howl. I can understand, though, if you can't do that for copyright reasons.

Date: 2008-05-07 12:07 am (UTC)And congrats at being A.D! Should I look for your name in the credits?

Date: 2008-05-07 12:44 am (UTC)now on the sketches - you could post really sketchy-messy pic in LJ, and put slightly more polished or colored ver. of image into sketchbook?

Date: 2008-05-07 01:18 pm (UTC)As for the sketchbook, maybe post some images as teasers to whet everyone's appetite, but save your coolest ones as nice surprises for the actual book?
Love the mermaid's expression... Reminds me of your 'Waterfall' film. :)
