Hey ya'll!
Today was my first day back at Rough Draft since we finished up with the Futurama movies in the winter. I normally work as a Character Layout artist (which is kinda-sorta like a keyframe animator). I've also done some timing, storyboard revisions and character design.

but my new job is Assistant Director!!
(isn't that crazy?? This is my first time A.D.-ing ) I'm really excited about it. I hadn't wanted to say anything about it previously, because I never count my chickens. But YEAY! It's on a brand new animated show.

also, randomly, I drew a mermaid. I think I'd like to do some drawings for a self-published sketchbook for '08, but tell me honestly, if I post them on my journal, are you going to be less likely to buy a sketchbook? Would you rather they be a surprise and "new material" for the sketchbook? Lemme know what you think, huh?

one thats AWESOME about the assist director.

and I think on the sketch book you can show some images you'll include in the sketchbook and then keep some that are sketchbooks exclusives so that they know there will be material that has yet to be seen.

Congratulations!

I don't usually buy books, but I do enjoy seeing people's work because it does make me more likely to buy in order to have something physically in hand. Especially if there is a piece of art inside that I really like. If that makes sense.

I would very much like to purchase a sketchbook but I would prefer to be suprised, I like the whole excitement of waiting for the mail and then seeing brand new stuff much better than stuff I've already seen :D

LOVE the sketch (not to mention your icon!)

I'm opting out of the sketchbook question - I rarely buy sketchbooks because of the shipping cost to Australia. I love seeing your sketches though!

And congratulations on making A.D. :)

Yay! Congratulations, that's awesome!

Personally, I like when you post pictures. I guess you shouldn't post all of them, but I find that I'm more likely to buy a book when I've seen a bunch of the pictures than when it's all a surprise.

congratulations!!!! that's exciting!

also-- for me there's a difference between seeing art on the computer screen and actually getting a hard-copy of it in person... which is why I love artists sketchbook collections.

Given the quality of your work, and if you were to include even a few sketches new sketches, I would probably invest in a self published sketchbook from you.

But then I really love your work.

I personally like it when people post some images from their sketchbook, but not all. Keeps me wanting more, and more apt to buy the sketchbook in the end.

I imagined the "hey y'all" part of that in the voice of Paula Deen.

Congratulations! A promotion is you!

I'd want a sketchbook regardless of whether they're posted online cos sometimes you want to thumb through something tactile. I regret not getting the one you did last summer. ;_;

I would buy a sketch book with your drawings, I like surprises though haha sneak in some pictures that aren't posted :) For example, I liked reading the stuff posted for Japan Ai but of course not everything on Go Comi is on the site, I also prefer holding material over staring at a computer monitor. Wow congrads on the new position. That's pretty cool, I hope to hear more about it XD I probably talked your ear off about me getting my degree in Animation so I like when you post stuff like this.

Congrats on being an AD.

I'd buy the sketch-book if I liked the drawings. It wouldn't matter to me if I'd alredy seen them before the book was out. Maybe just show a couple as a preview?

As far as a sketchbook goes, I don't think seeing them online would prevent me from buying it later. Are you going to have copies of Japan Ai at Fanime, by the way? I want mine signed by the author! XD

I have to say, I never buy an art book (this includes large photo books, etc) when I do not know what the images inside look like, or at least have a good idea. It's when I love the images I know will be in it that I'm motivated to purchase something like that, and/or I can flip through it. I would suggest keeping some surprises to catch people who want to see the work, but at least show some of it.

As for sketchbooks: previews of some of the content is great but don't give all the content away because who doesn't love to be surprised?

Re: Sketchbook & Posting Pictures
I'd buy your sketchbook. I love the way you draw and I'd like to have something tangible I can take with me places that don't have computers. Though, I would say to keep some things super-secret and post some. Each drawing you post is like a delicious cupcake-- we'd all suffer from sugar overload if you posted all your sketches at once. (Shoot, I'd eat the whole cake and then sone.) By posting some and publishing all, I believe you'd whet our pallet so we could savor all the delicious artwork.

Hooray for the promotion! Personally, I think anyone who was ever involved in Futurama should get government posts and a house on the shore, but then I LOVE Futurama.

"I think I'd like to do some drawings for a self-published sketchbook for '08, but tell me honestly, if I post them on my journal, are you going to be less likely to buy a sketchbook?"

Considering almost everyone here has already bought Japan Ai...

If anything, posting sketches up beforehand will help promote the sketchbook.

Will you be including your sketches of Futurama and Howl's Moving Castle characters? I especially love your renderings of Sophie and Howl. I can understand, though, if you can't do that for copyright reasons.

As for the sketchbook, maybe post some images as teasers to whet everyone's appetite, but save your coolest ones as nice surprises for the actual book?

Love the mermaid's expression... Reminds me of your 'Waterfall' film. :)
