So, since the weekend of my birthday I was sick some of my girlfriends took me out to the Tea Rose Garden for Frou Frou tea. It was good and it was great to be chatty chatty girls! We're making it a habit to once a month or two try a new tea place. Here's the posie they made for me:

Also for randomness...
Youta attacking tissue paper:

I'd meant to go to the cosplay meetup, but it was soooo hot... I wimped out.
Today I learned more about my sewing machine at Joann's and then I got dressed up in kimono and Mitch and I went into Little Tokyo for Nisei Week. We got there too late for the fun food vendors though, but just in time for the parade.
My outfit: (butterfly ro kimono), (chidori bird obi and obidome)
my kitsuke is a little sloppy today though. I was tired. I almost didn't go to the parade, but I knew I'd regret it if I didn't go. (I'm so glad I went!)

I have NO IDEA what was the deal with this shrine-looking thing they were carrying? Does anyone know? It was rad though. They were all yelling and tilting around with it:

and then came the main event....
these dancers cleared the way for the samurai float:

which was HUGE (30 x 24 x 17) and AWESOME. Seriously. They moved it like it was stalking or something. There was lots of men underneath it pulling it different directions.

the back had a big screen with a tiger...

and then on the way back to the car, I'm all "OMG TIMES paper is so SEXIST!"

FINALLY:
Video of the Nebuta Samurai Float (AWESOME!!!!)

Neat pics! I regret never getting down there for Nisei week.

I believe that's a mikoshi:

The portable shrine is sort of a "car" for the Shinto Gods to travel in during festivals, so they can participate and bless the event, instead of having to stay home in their main temple (and watch it on TV, or whatever Shinto Gods do. ^^)

Nebuta floats are awesome. Emeryville Taiko is wanting our Taiko dojo to help them build some mini / very simplified versions for a performance in the fall.
