help with itunes/ipoding videos
Dec. 25th, 2006 08:15 pm(pst, I've finally retired my 5-year old ipod, thanks to Mitch getting me this one. I'm so friggin excited. XD~!)

back to topic though,,... ok, so I have a lot of fansubbed stuff in mp4 format, when I try to play it in quicktime (or itunes) the audio plays but not the video.
Now,... I can watch these files easily in VLC. But is there some way I can convert them to a quicktime/itunes compatible format (like .mov or a video-intact.mp4 ?) Apple's site is all like "buy QT pro, or convert with itunes" but I tried converting with itunes and it didn't work. and I'm not sure that QT pro would work either even if I did buy it.
I have no trouble with the .avi files, I can easily convert them into .mov with divx doctor.
I'm sure this must be an easy to fix thing.
sidenote, I finally got lastfm to work again! Here's my profile page if you want to see what kind of crap I listen to!

Date: 2006-12-26 04:47 am (UTC)Ironically I'm dealing with this situation now, figuring out all the video stuff on a Mac vs a PC.
So you want to convert MP4/DivX/XviD stuff to play on your video iPod right?
Well a free video editor that I've started using is called Avidemux. From what I can tell it can convert most AVI files to MP4 or something that Quicktime/iTunes can import. I haven't tried it myself though.
It's a Unix application though, so you'll need to install X11 on your Mac first. It comes with your Mac OS X Disk 1 or you can download it from the link I provided. After that's installed, you can run Avidemux.
With that you should be able to convert any AVI file to an MP4 file that iTunes can handle.
There's also a ton of other apps listed here. I haven't gone through all of them, but one of them should also do it if Avidemux doesn't work or is too much of a pain to use.
One commercial app that I ran across is called Roxio Popcorn. It claims to be able to convert video to the iPod video, but at that price, you might as well by the Quicktime Pro.
If I run into anything else I'll let you know too. :)

Date: 2006-12-26 04:58 am (UTC)Ok I found this, iSquint. It's very easy to drop most video files into it and it will convert it so that it plays on the iPod.
It has a bigger more complicated cousin called VisualHub, which is trys to get you to download. But if you're JUST trying to get video onto our iPod, iSquint should be enough. It even has an option to automatically add it into iTunes for you. So I'd suggest you try that first.

Date: 2006-12-26 06:10 am (UTC)If you want, put the video up somewhere and I can tinker with it. You have me curious now. :) It plays fine in VLC right?

Date: 2007-03-23 08:41 pm (UTC)I did a little detective work... Someone posting in a forum suggested ffmpegX... And there are lots of vid converters here too it seems. I do hope you can find one that helps with your Sugar Sugar Rune fix.
Sorry I can't be of more help. :/
