I'm this close to going completely postal on verizon. 2 1/2 hours, 2 verizon stores and 5 phone calls later, I still am not able to transfer files from my mac to my RAZR and vice versa.

I know that this is POSSIBLE. my phone, because verizon is the evil queen, does not have OBEX, the software required for me to be able to use bluetooth. You know why? Because VERIZON INTENTIONALLY ASKED motorola to make the phones for Verizon with NO OBEX so that all Verizon's customers would have to use verizon's pay per picture service to transfer files. THIS SHOULD BE ILLEGAL. I am so angry I'm almost ill. Motorola actually TOLD me this. That Verizon intentionally did that, and plenty of websites also talk about it. Verizon's answer? "We can't give you that software at this time... sorry!" (I told them off)

My phone does not work with the USB kit because they never made a MAC version of the software needed to read the phone. I can use isync, but I can't get files to and from my phone (like pictures.)
I've heard that the 02 version of the software for my phone has OBEX on it. (this was before Verizon realized it and had OBEX erased in version 03 and 04.) My phone is running on 03.

I've heard that if I can somehow find the 02 software and flash the phone myself, then I can have OBEX, and be able to use bluetooth, and thwart the evil empire, Verizon.

HELP!! I've been trying howards forums and other forums but it seems I'm getting the "ew look it's a newbie" curse. Shit, I would pay someone to get this to work on my phone, I just need it to work! Or not work so that I can return the fucking thing and go back to my super lame archaic non-camera phone.

I mentioned this to Terry the other day and he says he knows of a workaround...I can ask him to be more specific.

If you have a paid Livejournal, there is a way to post pictures and entries from your cell. I've never done it, but it'd at least be able to get your pictures off your phone:
http://www.livejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=253

Though you may have to pay for this, too. :\ Depends on your service, I guess.

Sounds frustrating!

Have you tried something like this yet?

http://www.askdavetaylor.com/motorola_razr_v3c_and_mac_os_x_transfer_pictures_and_wallpaper.html

If you've already set your phone up with Bluetooth, you'll need to remove it from your computer before trying the hack. Don't worry, it's quite easy. :D

I have a Motorola V710 with Verizon which has a similar lockout, but a hack like this worked for me just fine. (Of course, I just use it to sync with Address Book... I still send files back and forth by way of the little memory card slot.)

how do you mean "remove bluetooth"?

do you mean just removing the dongle and then putting it back in? cause I tried with bluetooth before... and then I tried this hack and it didnt work. so how can I remove it and try again?

*sad puppy*

If it's already showing up as a Bluetooth device in System Preferences, you'll have to go into the Bluetooth subheading, open Devices, and delete it. Then I'm pretty sure you can try the hack. (I'm not sure if that's your exact model of Razr, but if it's not, please do tell me what it is, and maybe I can help!)

well... I tried deleting it and retrying, and I still get the same error "device doesnt have the nessesary services" or something like that, once I try to browse bluetooth device.

I'm using 03 software which I've heard doesnt have the nessesary software (OBEX) to allow bluetooth...

Okay, been reading through lots of pages on HowardForums, so this is how I understand it: .04 is the most current software available. if your phone came straight from the store with .03 software, OBEX isn't installed on your phone. It was available in .02, so people who upgraded straight from .02 to .04 can still use it. People going from .03 to .04 can't, since it doesn't add it back onto the phone if it isn't already there.

I am not sure how to do it on a Mac--I can do a bit of research for you, if you'd like--but apparently you can get OBEX if you flash your phone back to .02 and THEN upgrade to .04 at a Verizon store. I'd try Googling "flash software (or firmware?) razr mac" or something like that... see what comes up.

I've been reading this thread,... it seems that I can probably flash my phone to 02 using my husbands PC... and then get 04 at the verizon store.

but I've never flashed a phone before so I'm a bit concerned

I think the directions seem pretty foolproof, so I'm sure you'll be okay. ^^ Probably a good idea to back up your address book somewhere, though, just in case... (but unless you check the overwrite option, those things should be fine)

even if I lost it, I'd only loose maybe a couple dozen contacts which are all on my ipod if I needed to reenter (and if I could get isynch to work, etc, then concievably I could synch contacts from my cmputer on to my phone, right?)

Bingo! So you should be alright. (I love iSync ♥) If you try it, let us know how it goes! Fight the system! Stick it to the man!

(It's a damn shame, too, because I really like Verizon otherwise. Customer support has always been good to me, I always have a good connection even in this black hole of a house, and they have some lovely phones, but ugh...! They seem to be adopting a better attitude about file transfer now, though, which is good. I hope it's not just a temporary farce.)

oh no!

I am not putting a lawsuit against verizon...I'm just another artist looking for some good talk inbetween work on the video game Saints Row :)

According to these 2 forums below, if you have the 03 version, nothing can make OBEX work because the code was actually *taken out* of the software. So I don't think that a hack would work.

But, if you have 02 or 04, the OBEX code was still in the software, just not activated. So there are hacks to get it to activate and work. But 03 users seem to be out of luck, from what I read.

Here's the cache of one forum that talks about it:

http://72.14.203.104/search?q=cache:D4z9jUHGZV4J:cavemonkey50.com/2006/04/verizon-enabling-file-transfers-on-razrs/+mac+02+obex&hl=en&lr=&client=firefox-a&strip=1

And here's a link to a current forum that talks about the 03 having the code for OBEX stripped from the software:

http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=893475

Definitely sounds like class action to me...but what do you get in a class action---pennies? The lawyers are the only ones who get any compensation.

You know what? I know you've been fighting this all this time. But I really think you should just return the damned thing. :P This is just stupid that you can't do a simple thing like transfer your images off your phone without paying a Verizon tax every time. :P

If you're really attached to the RAZR you can get them from both Cingular and T-Mobile and they do not restrict image transfers off of the phone. Or go with any of the phones from other carriers that allow easy image transfers off the phone.

I think it's you've spent enough time fighting the stupid phone. You should just get one that works. :)

IMHO of course. :)

I am in agreement with the thought of switching carriers, if that's an option.

My boss claims that if they try to make you pay that "but you cancelled your contract early" business, all you have to do is threaten to go to the FCC and they seem to leave you alone (or at least he bragged to me about doing that, but then again he is only 5'6" tall, and one can't trust the words of a short man too much).

unfortunately at this point I've passed the 15 day "you can't return your phone now point" and to get the phone I had to sign another2 year contract, so not only would I be out of the $150+ for the phone, but I'd have to pay for a new phone, and pay the fine for getting out of Verizon...

I'm not sure what to do. :( It' took me 15 days just to figure it out to this point! I thought for sure that there must be some way to transfer files!! I feel like I"ve been lied to.

No I'm afraid not. :( Verizon uses a different network then Cingular or T-Mobile. It only works on Verizon. :(

I'd say return it and get a full refund, but you said you're past the 15 day return policy. :( Maybe you can call them, yell and scream and they may let you return it anyway? Though since you're leaving, that's probably not likely to happen. :/ It doesn't hurt to try anyway though.

My only suggestion is to back out of the contract and return the phone if you can and switch to another carrier. Then get a new phone with them and transfer your old number to the new carrier.

Of course, that all depends on if you can cancel with Verizon. :/

If you can't cancel, did you try asking Verizon if you could get the new firmware on your RAZR? The details were in the email I sent you earlier.

yeah, the email you sent though,... apparently there is a catch. I'm running 03 software,... the patch is for up to 04, but it doesnt include the crucial part... OBEX.

02 to 04 is fine... but apparently 03 to 04 doesn't give you OBEX, which would mean I'm still fucked. :( (though people with PCs who wanted to use USB are happy now...)

yeah... the only way at this point, other than throwing a tantrum (which I might do), is to eat the cost of the phone AND breaking my 2 year contract, and then buying a new phone and contract with another company (who hopefully isn't as evil? but I'm feeling very discouraged at that idea too.)

I'm pretty sure in CA (and most states) you have 30 days after signing a contract to get out of it with no penalty- especially in cases such as this. So if you got the phone with a new or renewed contract that's an option for at least getting your money back.

California law trumps the Verizon contract.
You can get out of it.

I've had T-mobile since 03/03. They've been prettty good.
But my mom doesn't get service at her camp in Maine with them while my brother got service with Cingular, so we're doing a switch to Cingular now.
My friends who have Cingular mostly like them just fine.
