so erm... my computer is aging a bit, and I do have a solid job and all so...

my current computer is a 500 Mhz G4.

(and then there's that WoW thing... but this has nothing to do with that hahaha...)

seriously though,.. my DVDRAM drive hasn't worked for a year, the CD drive in my computer doesnt work at all anymore... it's starting to be pretty slow when doing photoshop (and my new digital camera images are way too big to edit now... even if they are on medium setting...) and when I multitask in Safari it's um... yeah slow. this is after I have a ton of ram in it that I added. :\

the iMac is REALLY cool looking, but I imagine it's harder to add ram into it and add internal harddrives and that sort of thing huh? It's mean to be a more casual computer right? where as the powermac G5 is supposed to be more of a workhorse, so that would probably be a better suited thing for me?

If I got a new computer, could I take my 1 gig stick of ram and that new internal hardrive I got and put it in my new computer to make it even better???

Does a Dual processor REALLY HELP? Does it help $400 worth?

I dont think I can afford one yet but it's fun to think about it anyway...

Most dealers will add extra memory into an iMac for you when you buy it. So you can supe it up beforehand. Also, there are lots of firewire/usb hardrive options you can get to plug right into it.

I had an older iMac for years and LOVED IT. If you are not a mod jockey, I think they're fine. You can add stuff to it easily, and the newer ones should be able to take a lot of ram.

On the other hand, you should be able to add your current mem/hd into any new computer you get. Again, the dealers might even help ya out there.

As a G5 owner, I can wholeheartedly support its purchase. There is like no task I've thrown at it that it can't handle smoothly and quickly, and since I'm mostly running Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, iTunes, plus a couple of browsers, it's pretty swell. The only time it's shown the slightest bit of effort is when I'm messing around with making movie files and that's because I've only got the default memory in; still haven't gotten more but I haven't reeeally needed to do so. It's amazing. It's a year old (got mine when they first came out) and it was worth it. It's so reliable, so flexible, and so attractive to boot. ;_; The only thing with the memory is that you need to add memory sticks in pairs, so you'd have to get another 1 gig stick... but then you'll have TWO gigs of memory and this a very good thing. *_*

UGH! I have a G4 too, and it is unbearably slow, to where it's a miracle if I can even use Photoshop. Painter is out of the question. And there's limitation to multitasking (Itunes, AIM, and IE is a nono), and I've put in as much RAM as I could! It's very frustrating and I often find myself chewing out a machine, but luckily I'm going to be getting a G5 for my bday/xmas and I heard it's very good for using all those hardcore art programs (Photoshop etc). I think I even read somewhere that the G4 Sawtooth had some sort of production problem, where the Mhz was short of what it was supposed to be? I dunno, but hrm, I dunno much about the iMac... bleh. *facepalm*

2 gigs+ definitely a good thing considering that I really really hope to do one of my films soon and obviously rendering something and ram are a good match!

this is a RETARDED question, but... when it says "1.8GHz PowerPC G5
600MHz frontside bus" does that mean it's 1.9 Ghz or 600 mhz processor??? I dont get it. Me dumb

The 1.8GHz refers to the speed of the processor and the 600MHz refers to the speed of the bridge between the processor and the ram.

I'd go for the G5, it'll meet your needs longer. = longer time until next purchase.

I have a G4 with duel processors, and I think it's the dual processors that have managed to keep me up to speed. I have to run 10 million things all the time, and it makes a difference. (I want a G5! *whine* :p)

If you're going to be working on your film, I think you'll be glad to have that dual processor.

I have a G4 Dual 867MHz and have never noticed any major lags when using stuff like Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign or Quark. And you know, even when playing pr0n things still run really smooth... LOL j/k

I'm all for the dual processors. Mmm...sexy.

If I were you I'd go for the G5. It's a machine you can fiddle with and most likely what is best suited for the kind of stuff you do.

WoW

*sigh*

I can only wish at this point, so I'l be living vicariously through you the first time you play. ^^
We have an ancient mac, unfortunately(or fortunately...), it works fine for everything we do on the computer....and I have yet to convince Craig that we need a new one to play games....silly thing. ~.O

The processor's 1.8 gHz and the frontside bus is 600 mHz. The frontside bus carries data to/from the memory and processor. I push my nerd glasses up for you!

the imac: you can take off the back panel easily, just about everything is user replaceable. adding ram is easy, this way...Limited to 2 GB of RAM, Video card is anemic.

The Power Mac: (assuming you are looking at the low single processor model) basically it shares allot with the iMac, but the power mac has PCI slots, and an AGP slot. which means you can upgrade the video card later on. and add a second hard drive easily. and you'll love the firewire, usb, and headphone ports up front.
