confession time!

Y'all already know I like ridiculously romantic movies/books, dancing/musicals... and I really love "exotic" cultures. Well, I'd watched a couple highly rec'd bollywood movies and I liked Shahrukh Khan... but I didn't like how tragic some of them were. Don't get me wrong, I like tragic movies sometimes. (*cough* Rose of Versailles *cough) but some of these just seemed so unnecessarily tragic... and the sad parts were SO LONGGGGG.

So I was looking for some romantic bollywood where Khan didn't die or be tortured for an hour.
This past week, I've watched Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge AND Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi. Both were really cute, though Dilwale was a bit slow starting for me... but by the end I was totally into it. and I'm all YAY YAY DANCING ROMANCE! YAY! (and now I want some long indian skirts made out of soft soft fabric.)

Feel free to recommend more bollywood cute romances that you think I might like.
Sidenote: While I liked -parts- of Veer-Zaara, Devdas and Kal Ho Naa Ho... overall they left me feeling down. By the way, the image at the top of this post is from Devdas, which has some really stunning songs in it like Silsila Ye Chahat Ka) Next on my rental list is: Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Om Shanti Om, Paheli, Swades, Main Hoon Na, Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani, Dil To Pagal Hai, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham. (though some of them I can't get on netflix.

(Always open to Japanese, Korean or Chinese (or whatever) dramas that are happy/romantic, too... )

By the way, specifically about Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi,... I loved the Haule Haule sequence where Surinder is sitting backwards on the back of the little bike, going through the marketplace, just as he's falling in love. As he breaks into song, it feels totally natural! And I know that feeling where you're going through some lovely place outside, and you just feel super happy and want to skip! So I really loved that song. You can just watch the first min and a half of it.
And Tujh Mein Rab Dikhta Hai (below) is just GORGEOUS.

It was also kind of amusing because Mitch is kinda-sorta like the main character guy. The main character is a bit Clark Kent. He's a mild-mannered serious, shy office worker, but in order to make his arranged marriage wife happy, he creates a kind-of wild alterego so that he can secretly go dancing with her. The video above shows the dichotomy between his parts, but how both parts love her. (Mitch is a little of both of these egos. Not really, it's not really fair to compare Mitch to a bollywood character,... but I thought it was cute.)

Haha, Silsila Ye Chaahat Ka was definitely the song that made me fall in love with Bollywood.
I'd recommend Om Shanti Om, Khan doesn't die!

I'll try that one next! :) I enjoyed your posts about bollywood, but it took me a while to have time to watch them. if you have other recommendations (not just Khan) of cute ones, let me know! Not in the mood for everyone dying right now I guess. but Silsila Ye Chahat Ka is a GORGEOUS sequence.

It's not Bollywood (it's Filipino) but it is a magical, musical, dancing movie of crazy ridiculous things, a cute love story, and it's LGBT-themed to boot, check out ZsaZsa Zaturnnah Ze Moveeh if you haven't.

I wish I knew Bollywood movies but I only ever watched a few from a local store and they had no subs. Still really fun to watch though :3

ack, i found it, but it's a comedy rather than a romance. xD it's called Lage Raho Munna Bhai if you were still interested though!

Hum Tum

Have you seen the movie "Hum Tum"? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hum_Tum

I strongly recommend it. It is a romantic comedy about a cartoonist and it has some nice animated sequences in it. It is one of my fav Bollywood movies.

Homg I love the Haula Haule as well! Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi is a cute movie. I've been interested in Bollywood movies for longer time too, but haven't really fiured out where to find good ones yet. (So no recommentations from me) But I'm going to check the ones you mentioned here.
I think one of the reason I like Bollywood movies is that they'ra almost half-musicals. Musicals are totally underapreciated...

Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi is my favorite Bollywood film. My dining room is plastered with the lobby cards (the stills from the eating contest between Taani and "Raj" are right above my table <3)

Paheli is GOOD. You think it'll be tragic, but it's SO SO not. Just hang in there with it. Kuch Kuch Hota Hai is super adorable, except it starts off all :( but it works all out in the end. Hum Tum is a cute film, Dostana is hilarious but not exactly "romantic," Lagaan is a great film if you can find it (romance and sports!), Om Shanti Om is GORGEOUS to watch, and better if you know all the inside jokes. Main Hoon Na is adorable, but not as romantic comedy as some of the others.

My boo, Ranbir, is becoming quite popular. Check out Bachna Ae Haseeno and Wake Up Sid, two of my favorite Ranbir flicks. The former is about a playboy who finally falls in love and what he has to do to "win" her, and the latter is about a slacker kid who does some growing up. The music in Wake Up Sid is some of the most gorgeous music I've heard in Bollywood.

If you want more recs, you know where to find me - I'm always going to see them. In fact, I'm going to another film tomorrow. :)

Thanks man! I'll try the ones you suggested, I basically would love some happy/romantic films to watch, extra points if they have fabulous music. I really enjoyed Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi. :)

My faaaaave Bollywood flick is Jodhaa Akbar. My husband and I were actually dancing around at one point, the music was that infectious! (We ended up buying the soundtrack) Oh yeah, and a seriously hawt leading man. Occasionally shirtless. Mrowr.

*points to icon* HELEN! xD

Erm, I haven't seen it myself yet but 'Love Aaj Kal' looks pretty rad. I have the soundtrack and I personally ADORE it, not as many 'get up and DANCE' songs as one would expect, but I still love it x3

Oh, and I saw 'Kal Ho Naa Ho' on your list! I had 'Maahi ve' on repeat for like, 2 weeks after I heard it and watched the dance sequence!

I love Bollywood movies too. It started when I saw Bride & Prejudice. Shahrukh Khan is my idol. Devdas is very sad but so beautiful. Kal Ho Naa Ho I liked also but less.
My favorite are Kuch Kuch Kota Hai and Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham. Om Shanti Om is also good and I like Paheli a lot as well. Mohabbatein is nice too. Dil To Pagal Hai I found so-so.

It's not really "bollywood" in the truest sense of the genre, but have you seen "Bride and Prejudice"? It puts a bollywood spin on Jane Austin's "Pride and Prejudice"... and the music and dancing are quite fun. It's a little on the cheezy side, but that only adds to the film's charm. Even talking about it right now makes me want to watch it. =)

I have to watch Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi now. It looks adorable. I would suggest this:

Some parts are sad, but the beautiful shots, and the great ending...it's worth it.
