Descanso Rose Gardens (IMG HVY)
May. 5th, 2010 07:57 pm
I got a break from work today and on a whim went to Descanso Gardens. They have a HUGE collection of roses (around 3,000), some are once-blooming and Old Garden Roses and pretty much all of them are blooming right now. I stared and studied every single one that remotely caught my eye. :D :D My camera ran out about half way through so I wasn't able to photograph the hybrid musks, wichurana ramblers or more of the old hybrid teas. (boo!) I actually found a couple hybrid musks that I'm totally in love with, namely Penelope and Lavender Lassie. I also fell in love with a couple Bourbons and Hybrid Perpetuals (pictures below) and am debating them. :)
Hope you enjoy seeing some of them! Please bear with the photo saturation, it was at midday and very bright out.
I'll post a few more from the Iris area later. (and also the plants I bought at the nursery...)
DESCANSO'S ROSE COLLECTION:
Abraham Darby
(seemed a little pale to me)

Baronne Prevost
I totally love this rose!

Marchioness of Lorne. it's a Hybrid Perpetual.
Look at that lovely arched branch hanging over the fence!

Another similar one I liked, Mme. Lauriol de Barny Bourbon.

the saturation is a little overcompensating on my camera, but Benjamin Britten was bright (just not quite this bright)

Blush Noisette

I thought this rose had kind of old hybrid tea flavor to it's blooms. It was charming to me.
Bow Bells

a giant Cecile Brunner at the entrance

Charles Austin

Charles Lawson
this was a HUGE bush. HUGE.

an adorable "cottage" that they used to hold the restrooms

Crepuscule was looking a bit brown

Crocus Rose

Emily

Evelyn

Gene Boerner
totally covered in flowers

Glorie de Guilan

another GIGANTIC BUSH, Gros Choux d Hollande

Heinrich Munch
charming!

La Marque
(beautiful!)

Lilian Austin was not QUITE this bright... but was bright.

Marechalniel
charming and simple

Mayflower

giant moss monster!

huge clump of nepeta with roses

Proliferade Redoute, another huge happy bush

Queen of Sweden, you are so sweet, come live with me

Reine Des Violettes
had a little bit of petal crisping and appeared a bit more purply black than mauve-purple, to me? still lovely though, even though in a very hot full sun position

The only rugrosa that was really blooming (though all of their foliage looked nice enough to my untrained eye)... was Scabrosa.

Really interesting bloom on Serratipetala

Symphony
This rose was COVERED in blooms. It was really striking.

Sophy's Rose

Wise Portia wasn't quite this bright, but was bright

A stunning setup of Sombreuil climing... with Reine Des Violettes and companion plants at the base. I can't tell you how gorgeous Sombreuil was.

Date: 2010-05-07 05:13 am (UTC)We used to go to Decansco Gardens a lot when I was a kid, but haven't been in years. Somewhere there is a picture of 4 year old me posing in the midst of one of the rose bushes. ;)
