hey Ya'll, so I've been debating getting Mitch some sort of gothic coat for a while... and while I like these options: regent coat, pirate coat, highgate coat, man's full length coat...

I think perhaps the best thing for him is a historical Victorian tailcoat set, like this one from Gentlemen's Emporium. Mitch looks really good in suits and formal attire and I am planning on making myself a Victorian soonish... additionally, I want to make Mitch a 18th century frock coat set, but that's going to take a while. And I'm guessing for really really fancy gothic and lolita events, he could get away with wearing victorian...? (dunno about that... a bit debatable.)

Another great thing about getting him a Victorian set is... I've always wanted to do a really good Phantom of the Opera couple set with him... (click for reference of the Phantom ... more pics here. I'm right in assuming that the Phantom, regardless of incarnation would be wearing a formal Victorian tail coat, right...?

Would that Gentlemen's Emporium Victorian tailcoat ALSO work for stuff like Dicken's Fair?

So what do say you? Good idea...?

I think you're doing the smart thing! It's such a classic costume piece. You'll get plenty of use out of it! And I've ordered from the Gentleman's Emporium before; they're good quality and good people. :)

That's a lovely coat, (tail coat from GE), but it really is evening wear, so you would need something less formal for Dickens. But in my book, all fancy coats are good, as our modern men just don't dress up enough, in my opinion.

Mitch likes conservative fancy. <3

Thanks, I didn't think about the "evening wear" issue.

Although, to be fair, Monte Cristo is almost entirely PRE-Victorian (its events end right about when the Victorian Era is usually said to begin). I'm not sure just what you'd call that era. Regency?

If it's French: Empire... corresponds roughly w/ the English Regency

Ancien Régime: pre-1789
Revolutionary: 1789-95
Directoire: 1795-1805
Empire: 1804-1815

... but I think that gankutsuou has an opera victorian coat... in addition to his normal modded typical modern man's suit:

Go for it! The Victorian tailcoat is certainly the best of the lot. Victorian dress is very classy and elegant in general. :D

I think he could get away with the tail coat at Dicken's as long as he creates the right persona for it and is completely dressed to the T's, and has a good partner to pull it off with, I am sure he could pull it off. If you want to sew your own less formal coat I have this pattern if you want to barrow it. The frock coats were more or less the same in the old west as Victorian England, the cuffs were a little different, and the lengths were a little different depending on where you were getting it made, and either tighter or looser in the waist (some may argue about this but such is the way it is). Plus the pattern is easy to modify, so you can always toy with it too. Gentlemen's emporium is also a good store, very responsive if you want to go that route. Wild West Mercantiles is also a good resource for coats, sometimes they are cheaper sometimes not then Gentlemen's emporium, they are harder to navigate, but it can be worth it.

they dont seem to have tailcoats at WWM, but they do have a frock coat:
http://www.wwmerc.com/cgi-bin/category.cgi?item=511099&type=store&category=search#

is that what you mean? Is this somehow better than the GE one...? (seems like about the same price) It's kinda hard to tell just from the photos of either merchant.

I'd rather him have a formal victorian tail coat for now, and then if later he decides he wants a day one, we'll do that then...

but I do like this as a day option.

Indeed it was a less formal solution. WWM is strange, I do find that their prices fluctuate here and there, but it is one of those things.

relatively, the LA area has a pretty big lolita community. I also go to a lot of costumed/fashion events.
