The first episode of "SIT DOWN SHUT UP" that I assistant directed (with Stephen Sandoval (Director)) will be on FOX this Sunday! Please watch. There's some really funny stuff in this one.

Please pay particular attention to the girly 80's montage with Helen and Andrew, I did a lot of it! There's also some pretty awesome boarding throughout. (I really love some of the Ennis and Stuart poses, they are CRAZY.)

This tv show (as a series), IMHO, gets progressively more funny and weird as it progresses. An example of this is Ennis's imaginary friend, a live-action kitten. (YES. you heard me. He debuted in the last episode. It's awesome.) (watch last week's "World's Greatest Teacher" on HULU) (mind, this isn't my ep, mine will air this Sunday)

I guess it pretty much "dates" me that I think I caught most of the 80's references and remember watching such when it first came out.

Is the girly 80's montage the one with references to various dance movies, like Flashdance? Too much blood.

It would be interesting to see the Aussie series this is based on.

Can I ask you two questions? [yes that counts as the first>]

How does someone direct an animated show? I've wondered about that for ages, but didn't have anyone I could ask.

well, I've never actually directed, so I dont have the full details of that, but I can tell you as much as I know.

Basically, we are given a script and optimally, a voice track. At this point the director goes through the script and starts thinking about how he wants to handle what occurs in the story and if there are any fires to pre-put out. He's also going to break up the script into segments and assign those segments to his storyboard artists.
He goes over the script with the storyboard artists, tells them what he'd like to see happen visually, if he has any ideas for that... and then the storyboard artist tackles their segments.

often the director will do some segments of his own, too. Basically, the director is expected to know how to do all the jobs required from the animation side of the production. So storyboarding, animation timing, retakes, etc, etc...

He then goes over each storyboard artists' thumbnails for each sequence (usually). to let them know if they are on the right track or make shot selections or suggestions, etc. After the sb artist finishes their sequence, he goes over it with them again, and then usually at that point they show it to a lead director (if there is one on that production.)

then all the storyboards are compiled with the voice track and the director sits with the editor (the compiler) and makes choices on how long to hold each storyboard, whether to cut boards, etc... whether they need extra boards, etc.

after this is done, what has been created is called a storyboard reel. This is shown to the guys who run the show (ie the non-animation side). In the case of the simpsons, it would be some of the writers and matt groening, etc... sometimes the network itself also has notes. They have their notes or things they want to have changed. sometimes they decide certain jokes int he script arent funny enough, or part of the story isn't reading and sometimes they do rewrites at this point. so some corrections are "mistakes" of the script, some are the artists (us) not interpretting them exactly the way they want. some are just plussing things and making them better.

then we go into a period called "revisions" where we change things based on the studio's notes. the director hands out the revisions and does a lot of them himself, too.
after the revised storyboard animatic (storyreel) we go into animation timing. timing is how long each action will occur in animation (very detailed, broken down movement and directions for animation) again, the director assigns segments to timers and does some himself. he also checks the timing, often fixing or changing timing as he sees fit.

then the timing and the storyreel is sent to korea. After it comes back, most of the time, the director checks it to see if they interpretted his instructions properly. he makes notes for what needs to be fixed, fixes are done in korea, and then sent back for the final show.

often times the director is doing storyboarding on one show while doing retakes or something else on a nother show.
