more angsty

~fave on DArt

Torchwood is a little too gorey for me. I'm such a wimp.

So I've been wanting to do a sitting angsty pose of the Doctor for a while. I've read a couple fanfics where the authors have the Doctor looking through Rose's old things after season 2. It fits so perfectly into canon, of course that's what happened, right?

I had to run to the postoffice before they closed, so I scanned what I'd done before I left and thought I'd show you a little of my work process. (I'm copying you, Christy!!) I forgot to scan when I started the bare bones of the sketch, but... basically, it was just a rough boxy shape of the Doctor's body.

I used these images for reference

It took about an hour, give or take for the rough sketch. This is about as far as I tie stuff down before going into graphite.

then the graphite part was pretty easy, taking about 30-40 min probably. I do the graphite right on top of the red pencil, and then I remove it in photoshop by removing the red channel. notice how he lost his glasses? :P

I'd like to color it, but (a) I'm tired and (b) I'm not sure I can get the darkness of lighting I want with markers without making a mess of it. (translation: Rose's room is bright obnoxious pink, so the lighting would have to be dark enough for the scene to read) So who knows.

Awwwww!
Poor poor Doctor.

A few things.- It's nice to see your process! I will have to try the colerase and red channel effect. You make drawing a scene look effortless, and I like how you use reference but don't blatantly piece together photos in a drawing.
I know next to nothing about Dr. Who but today in my menstrual woes accompanied by angel food cake I watched the episode in your icon and a couple before that one and can't help but say that I'm really interested! I have to watch the seasons proper from the beginning now! (After only a few episodes I cried at the end what the hell!)

that ending had me BAWLING. I'm such a sap.
if you're unsure, I'd recommend watching "Girl in the Fireplace", "Midnight" and "BLINK" those are pretty awesome and can be watched out of context. The show isn't for everyone, but I looooves it. :D

I totally second the col-erase + red channel. I felt like a complete moron after years of trying to select the black ink without selecting the red. *facepalm*

Aww, so sad. It fits perfectly with his reaction to Donna finding Rose's shirt in The Runaway Bride, yeah. Incidentally, LJ tells me happy returns are in order!

I love this picture... it's sweet.

And the torchwood comic made me giggle.

Wow, LOVE seeing how you progress from sketch to finished piece! I've always loved how you style was loose without losing any detail. AAAAAAAAND I really love the way you draw hands. :D

[identity profile] aimeekitty.livejournal.com 2008-08-10 04:29 am (UTC)(link)
thanks, I really really appreciate that! I never want to be too tight with things, but details are important, too, so that's a high compliment!

~* Happy Birthday, Aimee! *~ <3 I hope you'll have a really lovely day! *sends hugs and fancy cakes*

I've been really enjoying all of your DW fanart and this is no exception. But so sad, poor Ten. ;~;
It's great to see your process too... I'll have to try the colerase/red channel technique, it makes so much sense.

Oh, it's beautiful and sad and poignant. The look on his face just makes me want to cry! :(

As I understand it, TW is supposed to be for a more "mature" audience, and is on at a later hour than the Doctor. That seems to translate to more gore and sex talk.

[identity profile] aimeekitty.livejournal.com 2008-08-10 02:07 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah, that's my understanding, too. So far I like Doctor Who a lot more, but love John Barrowman, soooo...

[identity profile] jinyo.livejournal.com 2008-08-10 06:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, back when Barrowman was a guest on DW, I was hoping he would become a companion for a while longer. He's a fun character.

[identity profile] aimeekitty.livejournal.com 2008-08-10 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah, it'd be great if he was in more episodes but I guess now he has to take care of torchwood. :(

Hi Aimee,

Awww ;(! Poor Doctor! Supposedly, the T.A.R.D.I.S. has hundreds or thousands of rooms inside, most of which I suspect haven't been cleaned out by any of his previous companions except for maybe Sarah Jane's.

I want to give the Doctor a hug ;_;!
