So the first episode of Doctor Who that I ever saw, courtesy of AJ and Judy, was "The Girl in the Fireplace". They showed me that one to try to get me hooked, knowing my love of ballgowns. It worked!
I know a lot of people don't like GITF for various plot reasons, or dislike Pompadour, but I think the episode is very beautiful and poignant. In my quest to get Mitch caught up with me in Doctor Who, we watched GITF last night.

So here's a what if for "the slow path".

inspired of course by the François Boucher painting of Madame de Pompadour (one of my all-time favorite ballgowns, btw.).

also, I love Mignola's Hellboy, (in fact it's my very favorite western comic) but the reason I HAD to see Hellboy 2 was Prince Nuada.
Normally I remove my red undersketch in photoshop before posting, but it kinda adds to this a bit, don't you think?

That episode was written by Steven Moffat, who wrote the series Press Gang (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Press_Gang) which was popular in the UK and Australia (don't know about the US).

Just a quick plug for a fantastic show with stories and characters that have stood the test of time (though not the fashion!). See it if you ever have the chance. :)

I felt the same way about "The Girl in the Fireplace", and it's actually the episode I've watched the most. It's wistful, poignant, and beautifully done. Steven Moffat is the man.

Your drawing captures the tone of the episode well. I love these series of drawing you've been doing, with the Doctor reading beside his friends and companions. They make me squee ^^

For the record, I'm a gown geek too. I watch "Marie Antoinette", "Elizabeth", and "Gone with the Wind" over and over again... Gorgeous costumes are the easiest way to get me hooked!

I know why he’s there! It’s the perfect job for the TARDIS and the doctor: Get Madame de Pompadour to hop forward twenty years to see and visit “Le Petit Trianon”. It’s only fair since she planned the palace with her brother and then king Louis XV had the architect Ange-Jacques Gabriel build it for her. Sadly, she died four years before it was completed.

I must have gone through “Le Petit Trianon” at least twenty times, over and over again when I visited Versailles. Your drawing reminds me of that cute little palace and its incredible setting of gardens. They were formal, informal and in-between. There was an abundance of parking spots for the TARDIS, by the way.

much love for both drawings. I also love love love highly structured elaborate gowns and you did a fantastic job in your rendition.

I adore GITF, especially the horse and the mirror... Welll, that and Tennant's really great nuanced performance with his, at that time, girlfriend.

I actually really don't get the hate for that episode.

Brava as usual my dear. Such talent.... :D wow.

I have seen a smattering of Dr.Who and many of my friends insist I must watch it. I just haven't been able to find the dvds in Denmark. I really, really want to see more of it though!

Hellboy is also excellent, but luckily I am better versed in it. I've read the comics and am anticipating the second movie being released here.

Great drawings! And yeah, the red undersketch does add to that picture.

I hadn't really thought about it, that I'd been doing ones of companions and reading, but you're right! Maybe I'll keep doing some then. I like the theme. :)

They filmed Gone With the Wind near where I grew up. :)
