trying to catch up on email and sleep (I'm back in LA now) :)

here's an interview by Patrick Macias and Marui of me

~ it was based on a phone interview we had, so it's a bit off the cuff. I hope people can get the playful feeling through the text anyway. :) Thanks to the ever-generous Oscar and Sho for the photos.

I just want to do something cute and jubilant. I hope to start working on this soon. done with pen on the airplane.

I've been having so much fun with pupe and lovely white tea I had this morning thanks to sweet friends.

Poupée is so terribly addicting! I'm sure we (and our cameras, and our wallets) will soon need a support group.

Adorable tea set!

I'm totally addicted. it's a problem. my husband will be sitting at his computer with no clothes on and I'm like "OMG must fly open the shades so that I can take photos of a bracelet for pupe!" Husband: "OMG! I'm NAKED!" me: "OMG I don't CARE! pupe!!!"

I like those sketches! They're light and flowing, swirly and swoopy... I can tell you really like Miyazaki movies, there's a quality that reminds me a lot of his work. Are they for a new comic/sketchbook?

wah, thankyou! I do really like Miyazaki but I was more thinking of tinytinybitofhirschfeld + cute + make mine music. :) But obviously I take this as a huge compliment.

I really need to watch Kiki, Totoro and Laputa again. It's been too long. :)

Actually I really want to do some test animation, possibly a short film with some cute girls dancing. Probably big band or swing music. So these are the first sketches I've done for possible character designs.
I really want to make them cute and swoopy and squishy so that they will be fun to animate. I want the fun feeling of fun animation to show through in them and not be held back by a stiff design.

They do remind me a little of Hirschfeld, lots of nice movement to them!

If you need someone to do some music for your film, let me know. I know a couple musicians that can do really great older stuff. One, James Intveld has appeared in a few movies with his band doing swing music.

Poupee is such fun...and I'm actually getting my place organized a bit more while doing it. Just wish I had a great wardrobe like my girl, sigh.

I have a cd of James doing his swing stuff, I can see if I can up-load a few samples onto my vox or my space site. His swing band is called "The Swing Sinners" and they play once in a while at the Derby and Gene Autry Museum. He actually lives in Burbank. He does older and newer stuff, is quite talented.

I know of a couple other local guys who are good but not performing much. The cool thing about that is either they will perform cheap or the royalties on the songs already recorded won't be much. And there is also a lot of musicians at my school...in fact the Long Beach Municipal bands practice there every Tuesday I think? I can ask around and find more people there also. I know a lot of musicians who would work very cheap.

Let me see if can get a couple samples on tomorrow, and e-mail you the link. Sadly I can't find any on-line, but here is James' page for the band

thankyou, that would be lovely. I don't know what the royalties are on stuff like tuxedo j, it's pretty old, but I haven't looked into stuff like that.

Actually, most of the older songs are now beyond the copyright time frame. It's the performers who would need to be paid if you use music from a recording.

This might help you find music in the public domain

The other thing is there are older recordings that are now available to use that the copyright has expired on. Some of Elvis's first songs are about to be available. So that is something to look into, by checking the artist information. Here's a good page about radio shows now in the public domain, which includes musical broadcasts
http://www.royaltyfreemusic.com/public-domain/radio/

I'm sure you will find lots of music that will work!

huh, well Benny Goodman and stuff around the war period big band would still be under copyright, right? I'm a bit foggy this morning. Thanks for replying to me indepth, I really appreciate you taking the time. :)

No problem, I'd be happy to help out more, sound engineering is what I do!

I think what might be easiest is when you get to the point of wanting to work on what music is just make of list of the songs you would like, and then do the searches then. If it's an old performance then you would probably need to search by song title and performer's name. If you decide you want someone to record the song now, then the search would be to see if the sheet music is copyrighted for the big band songs.

Copyrights are filed with the Library of Congress, and they have an on-line search so that helps out a lot. Good luck with all of this! Sounds like your project will be fun!

stupid question... but if something is 1940 recording, is that still under protection?

Very cute article, I actually like how candid it felt. :)
Great sketches as well, looking forward to seeing more as you go along.

I had never heard of this Pupe thing, so I took a look. I think I'm in trouble, it looks addictive. D:
Me, if you'd like to add me. I'd be flattered, you have such cute taste. :3

Also, don't even get me started on tea! It's probably one of my main hobbies. I have over 30 types of tea in my house right now, and my dream job would be owning some sort of a teashop/bookstore. I get teased on WoW by my guildmates whenever the subject of tea comes up. X3
