Shojo Manga and LA Kimono Club

Ask me something you think you should know about me. Something that should be obvious, but you have no idea about. (Or just something that would help you know me better) Ask away.
Police Hunting for Otaku ?
(look out, AJ! You'd be stopped!)
I'm rereading Mars manga over the past couple of weeks. It really endures as one of my favorite over-dramatic shojo titles. :) I'm also rewatching the Beauty and the Beast tv series. Yeay, girly crap!! It will tide me over until the next Tramps Like Us comes out (feb 5th!)
Also I just got Nana #8. I like where Nana's (Osaki) development is going, and Takumi is getting more interesting! I don't quite understand Nana (Osaki) completely yet, though, but it's kindof a good thing... I am intrigued by her. :)
I went to have lunch with Mitch in Little Tokyo yesterday, the sky looked like this and I saw my friend the orange tabby again.
Also I got this sweet note from the LA kimono club with a couple photos from New Years:

Date: 2008-01-10 09:48 pm (UTC)This is not really an obvious question but, are you taking a break because of the writer's strike, or did you want to take one anyway? What are your thoughts on the strike?

Date: 2008-01-10 09:55 pm (UTC)I'd rather keep my thoughts on the strike private, but I will say, that I find it sad that artists get no risiduals at all. The artists often have as much of an effect on the final product and work just as hard as the writers do... but often the artists are seen more as simply cogs and have little power with unions or big companies (with some exceptions.) and with much of animation done overseas, I can't really see this changing soon in our favor.
Also, I guess you could say that it bothers me that no one seems to think about the far reaching effects of the writers strike. It's not just the writers who are effected. Everyone in the industry right now is hurting because of this. Often times any creative force (including writers) are not paid what they are due, so I'm not saying that they don't deserve what they are fighting for.

Date: 2008-01-10 10:02 pm (UTC)I understand wanting to keep your thoughts private. You being an animator was precisely why I wondered how you felt.
I do feel that the way all parties involved in a production are compensated has long been over due for some changes. A close personal friend of mine is a very talented, and hard working artist and I hate to seem him struggle to get by, while others are laughing all the way to the bank that are involved on his projects.
Hopefully both parties can compromise and end this strike soon so that everyone can pay their bills and feed their families.

Date: 2008-01-12 08:03 am (UTC)forgive the utter stupidity of it, but what exactly do you do as "Character Layout" person?
(no subject)
Date: 2008-01-12 04:07 pm (UTC)the more complex or unusual the action, the more poses we would do stateside. so like a cute dance, most of the drawings would be done here...
but a normal walk, most would be done overseas.

Date: 2008-01-12 11:41 pm (UTC)Do you do all the characters in the scene at once, or do they get layered together from different people doing them?
(no subject)
Date: 2008-01-13 08:32 pm (UTC)though a lot of stuff that looks handdrawn now is actually done in flash. So it's hard for people to tell, I could see.
Each artist does the entire scene's keys, no matter what characters are in it. So if I have a scene with Leela, Fry and Bender, I do all three. typically they are drawn on a separate sheet of paper though, unless they are interacting closely.
