printing fabric?

hey,... so could you potentially make a drawing of a doll in photoshop, print it out on print-on-fabric-stuff... and then sew up the sides to make a really basic stuffed doll? ala these dolls?. Then potentially anyone I gave the photoshop file to could make the same doll really easily, right?

I know some of you have used the print on fabric stuff before right? Is it that hard? What do you think, would this be pretty easy to do? Where do you get the supplies? can I do it with my normal printer?

dankuuuu

I know people who have used regular printers to print designs on fabric. The trick is to get the cloth flat on a stiff enough paper so it doesn't wrinkle or jam. Cottons work best as material for this.

I don't know if they are washable afterwards though. If I remember correctly ink jet printers work the best...

if I was making a small doll it probably wouldnt matter if it was washable.

though I'd probably use it for cosplay too (again, rarely wash those...!)

hrm...!

Here's how to do it using "printable" fabric

although this seems more like doing transfers. I know people have printed directly onto the fabric they then sewed into outfits.

I haven't tried it yet but I've seen several places that sell Bubble Jet Set including Dharma Trading.

This one seemed nice because you can use your own fabric and not just white. =D I've been wanting to make doll dress fabrics, but sewing for myself has taken over sewing for dolls. T_T Poor things.

I don't know about a regular printer, but we have a huge HP printer (size of a small piano, on its own floor stand) that can print on anything including on printer-ready fabric rolls of any type of smooth fabric up to 24" wide. Have not bought any fabric for it yet though, but plans for custom Yukata print are already in mind for some point...

I've used some stuff that I got at Michaels that was printable cotton. It was on 8.5x11" sheets, and you'd send them through the printer on backing, and then peek the backing off, and there your cotton would be, ready to sew!

It worked well, my only complaint was that it was a little bit pixelly, but that might've been our crummy printer. Also, the cotton was relatively thin, and had a really wide weave. :/

You can get the supplies at any regular craft store. Jo Anne's Fabrics and AC Moore both have fabric for printers if you don't want to get it from the internet. It should work fine!
