So I saw an illustration on the front of a book for The Secret Garden by Charles Robinson. There was also a marie-antionette-ish illustration by Georges Barbi called "the Secret Kiss"... I can't seem to find any info on either artist online, really. can anyone point me towards a book fully illustrated by either illustrators? like a fairy tale book or anything really. I'd like to see more of their work.

or really, for that matter, post your favorite illustrated classic books (fairy tales, famous stories like The Secret Garden, whatever you'd like that you think I might like) preferably ones that aren't impossible to find. :)

--- Mitch and I went out yesterday, which was great. I've been so busy (and will be for much of Oct) that it was really important for us to get out yesterday.

Mitch strikes his best, "I'm the man" pose. haha
(just kidding honey, you rule. for real.)

the statue... is it Zeus taking another lady? O_O?

Then I made mitch go in the American Girl doll store. It was HUGE. I'd never been in one before. Mitch had to pose with the babies:

Way more amusing though was the DOLL HAIR SALON! They also had a dolly hospital! Immediately I was reminded of VOLKS. Mitch is trying very hard to look disgruntled here, but he can't help it, he's laughing! XD

lastly, I went to the dr for my knee today and saw this in the parking garage:

Haha, I was there yesterday too(the grove, not the doctor's) - it's about a mile from my house. I've never dared to venture inside the American Girl store, though.

I love the pics of your husband in the AG store. He has the same look mine would have! :-) That keyboard car is really cool too!

For illustrated books, I love this one:

And I love anything done by Trina Schart Hyman, particularly this book:

I went through a children's book binge last year, where I bought all the books I loved the illustrations in, when I was young! Some were hard to find, but Amazon marketplace was helpful. :-)

Have you ever been to Storypolis? It's a children's book store/ art gallery, it's pretty much one of the most awesome places in the world. Great place to find rare children's books and check out old and new illustrators. :D There are often shows, events, etc, it's really work checking out!

I would highly recommend the My Bookhouse Books if you can find a set. These were the ones I was going to try to get photos of for you...unfortunately my mom had everything piled up against the bookcase yesterday to make room for the party stuff so I couldn't get to them. :/

Wow...there appears to be a set on sale in your area! The illos are mostly b&w though some are colored like in that example photo. My fave illustration in the whole series is of the tongue-cut sparrow in kimono dancing for the old couple. My mom will still tease me about how I spent so much time just staring at that picture when I was little. ^_^;

Oh~! KS and I happened upon the Grove by accident when looking for a place to eat! We were so impressed by how well laid out the whole place was... AND the huge American Girls doll shop!!

As for books:
I suggest Island Heritage's Kaguya Hime - the Shimmering Princess... I think it's long out of print, but it's one of my favorite stories from childhood. (ISBN-13: 978-0896100053)

and

Japanese Children's Favorite Stories - one of my favorite compilations of Japanese fairy tales with cute chinese brush painting style illustrations. (ISBN-13: 978-0804834490)

There's a newer reprint available of Christina Rossetti poems with her illustrations. I found a copy on amazon. The only sad thing is barely has half the illustrations of the original. I've been trying to get copies on ebay for years. I finally managed to find a different book at an ok price through abebooks.com (I think. There's quite a few sites for searching for out of print books) and had to get it from England.

Check the links at the bottom for more pics

Ah, the American Girl store. I miss going there. When I was making a habit of ACen, I'd always stop there.

As for childrens' books, I am always a fan of the works of Mr. Robert McCloskey, especially Blueberries for Sal.

I was always a fan of Rumer Godden's The Story of Holly & Ivy, which you are honor-bound to read as a person who enjoys dolls (but try to find a pre-1984 edition if possible - the 1985 reissue changed some verbiage and has much less charming illustrations than the one that I enjoyed with my mom when I was little).

One of my favorite childrens' book illustrators from when I wwas little is Peggy Jo Ackley. I had two books illustrated by her when I was little that I loved. Her style is kinda Midwest-whimsy.

Keyboard Car!!

You look so cute -- and slim! ^_^

I'm a huge fan of Kay Nielsen, and I have a book that's a compilation of his work -- I'll have to dig it up to find the title for you. I got it on eBay for around $60, FWIW! :)

American girl is a wonderful store. Weekends are packed with little girls caring their dolls.

Did California store have any Local interesting finds?

New York has a Statue of Liberty Crown...for the dog. But it fits MSD head.

George Barbier?

ROTFL I LOVE the one of Mitch laughing! It's hilarious! And thank you for the car with all the keyboard keys on it, I am showing that to my boyfriend now!!!

There was this giant book of fairy tales I used to have when I was a kid... it really was HUGE. I wish I still had it, I used to read it every day and it had the most gorgeous illustrations in it (I especially loved the little mermaid, in fact, it was the "darker" version of the story, where she kills herself and ends up in the foam with her sisters o.o;). I wish I knew the name, because now, there's EBAY! :(.
