Please see my previous post regarding my book! :)

more kitsuke practice! (ignore nappy hair, I'm getting a haircut tomorrow and it won't obey me)
I'm getting better at it! I'm going to start making my maiko hadajuban, etc. soon.

for my maiko juban... most often it's a white pattern (usually flowers) on a red base. Technically for the outfit I'm doing, the fabric should be a ro-weave (open) silk. However, it's impossible to find that in what I need...
Soooo, considering that if this shows at all, it will be showing when I walk around, at the "skirt" part of my kimono (left forreference photo).
Should I use a cotton, like this? or should I use a chirimen rayon like this? ... or something else entirely?

I finally got the chandelier (yes it's pink) installed in my downstairs work room,... and I got my new portable animation desk in, and finally organized all my (well most of) my buttons and lace that were lying around! (I also put my Angelic Pretty dress on the dressform (which I still need to pad out, but oh well)...
Now I just have to put up picture frames, put up the mirror... and possibly add some shelves.
It's really getting there! :)

I like the second fabric, and a rayon is closer to a silk than cotton is, IMO.

I love your work room! Such a good idea, sometimes all of that arty craft stuff can get out of hand. I now have somewhere I can use my sewing machine since we bought the townhouse, and it's so nice to have again.

My hair has been doing the same thing lately - really need to get it cut! Thinking of a short pixie style this time.

I like the Rayon print a lot.

Your workplace is very pink!!! I love it!!! That chandelier is to die for!

it's so cute! i love how the pink and green fit together.

I love the patterns on the 2nd fabric's site, so cute. Makes me wish I could make clothes x3.

Is the round thing your animation table? if so, what's with the ring going around it? :o

Hi! that is a special built in light... the reason it looks odd is because my animation disk (the part with the pegbars on it) is not in it right now. :) I need a replacement disk, but many places are sold out and I'm not sure which type I want to get this time.

it's only remotely tidy because I just cleaned! I'm sure as soon as I start working again it will be scary. :D

(I need another obnoxious pink trash can for the other side)

I'd use the cotton you linked to. The pattern is more interesting, and you don't have the hassle of dry cleaning it, since rayon apparently hates water?

I agree, I like the cotton motif better, it seems more like the traditional older patterns.
but,... I just realized since I'm not going for full accuracy anyway, that I'm going to try to for a silk on YJA (I might be able to get a whole bolt for around $30. ) it's polyester, but it'll look the closest.

the pattern's pretty dead on and will match the grasses/water motif of my maiko kimono:

Cute Kitsuke!!! I love graphic prints like that, your gloves and pearls are a nice touch. =D

Chirimen is nice, but if you want comfort and ease I would go for the cotton. The print on the cotton seems maiko-ish too. ^_^

I kinda envy you. I wish I could get into kitsuke too... How does one even get started?
let's just ignore the fact that my figure is all wrong for kimono to begin with.. ^^;;;

what, you think with all the mcdonalds in japan that even japanese women are the right figure for kimono? :) they pad out you know so that they fit the shape better. ^____^

but there are certain height and width limits due to the fabric bolt sizes (at least if you want to wear most kimono anyway). This is why it's difficult for me, of course, but as you can see it's not impossible to find! :)

immortalgeisha.com <--- has a really great forum, if you go on the kitsuke knowledge base, that's a lot of stuff to get you started, etc...

but a good way to get started is just look around for kimonos you like. I'd be happy to help if I can! I get most of mine from ebay and ichiroya.com. If you see one you like, you could tell me your height and width and I can probably help at least somewhat see if it will fit you. (no guarantees, but I can guess pretty close. :) )

whatever is your widest spot, like your hips or your bust, you measure around it, as if you were going to measure your ribs for a new bra, etc.. that sort of thing.

I'm guessing you are probably relatively young and unmarried right? If so, you may have fun shopping for a furisode. (I wear them sometimes even though I'm married because I'm not really that old yet... but eventually I will have to stop wearing them.)

the main thing is the height and width...

and then kimonos, if you want to get OCD about it like I'm trying to do... you're supposed to wear them based on seasons. So particular flowers on a kimono signify what season you're supposed to wear them in. (like sakura for spring... crysanthemum for fall... etc...)
there's a seasonal thread on IG forums you can start to learn that sort of thing, but I'd be happy to help you out with that too.

the reason I say start with a kimono, is because if you find one that will fit you and you really really like, I can help you match or get w hatever else you need to wear it.

Well, I'm not too rich, and getting into yet another expensive hobby is a bit out of the question for me, so I won't go into the OCD matching yet, even though I'd probably be slaughtered if I were a Heian court lady.. but I'm not! :D

Furisode is a kimono with big sleeves, isn't it?
I think that 24 might start getting a bit old for it, but I'm unmarried, so...

I'll start shopping around then. :D
See how much I should budget for an all that, just for the 'starter' things... (kimono nagajuban obi and the sashes.. oh, the board too.. gwaaa @_@)

Thank you. ♥

well, there are some kimono that are acceptable for multiple seasons too. One of the best things to get that you can wear with almost any obi (so the obi changes the color scheme and season) is:

--- iromuji (all one color kimono)
--- a regular komon kimono (small patterns all over the kimono, like dots or small florals)

both of these are often less expensive and are extremely versatile.
examples:

komon:
http://www.aimeemajor.com/kimono/fpinkbolt2.html (since it's kind of a stripe/plaid, it would go with almost anything. I could wear it with an obi with blue, pink, white or black...)
more komon:
http://www.aimeemajor.com/kimono/bluecho.html
http://www.aimeemajor.com/kimono/greypink.html
http://www.aimeemajor.com/kimono/blackcho.html
http://www.aimeemajor.com/kimono/rochopink.html
http://www.aimeemajor.com/kimono/kimonostar.html (this one is extremely versatile!!)

this one:
http://www.aimeemajor.com/kimono/greycloud.html
since it's monocromatic and doesn't have any seasonal motif, you could wear it with almost anything...

and then iromuji:
http://www.aimeemajor.com/kimono/iro2.html

it isn't a cheap hobby though. :....(

older women who aren't married still often start wearing non-furisode. so it's really up to you what you'd like to wear.

certain muted colors (like a muted light blue/grey) are for older women, just fyi... but you probably shouldn't worry too much about that. Just that since you are younger, slightly more cheerful and brighter colors are generally more desired.

alot of the stuff in this set you can use for any season:
http://cgi.ebay.com/Yukata-kimono-accessories-set-hadajuban-himo-obi-ita_W0QQitemZ170104494592QQihZ007QQcategoryZ29452QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

try that sellers kitsuke section,... :)

yes, furisode is the really really long sleeves (and often bright patterns)

I'm 27, when I've asked people they seemed to think it was fine for furisode, but I'm guessing come 30 I should probably stick more to other kimono.

ps, once you learn about the seasons, you can spot w hich ones are multiseason (like some kimono have flowers from all four seasons... which makes it usuable at anytime)
