If I learned anything from my time in the Army- always wear flipflops (shower shoes) in the public shower. Use the shower shoes ONLY for the shower, never wearing outside. You'll be so much happier. Dollar store flips are your friend.
Oh, and don't touch anything you don't HAVE to. Hehehehe.
You don't have those holey plastic rugs there? My uni's gym showers were actually really clean. I loved showering there because they never ran out of hot water, and the water pressure is yum. I miss swimming now. :(
I never encountered hairballs, but then I usually have my glasses off from locker to shower and back, so that could be why. My own personal worst-ever locker room story involves walking into the clothes-optional sauna and finding a sniffy, moaning lady doing something with her hands inside that eventually frightened me into leaving before I got sufficiently dry.
I have that problem and always hitting someone, not on purpose, with my elbow while blow drying my hair. But that is what i get with going to the gym before work.

That's precisely why I leave the gym sweaty and smelly.
If you ever want to really gross me out, just put a few strands of hair here and there. That's my Number One Unreasonable Phobia.
