girl's kimono+hakama sets

Can anyone tell,... is this a rental, or an actual buy?.... these are graduation day sets, right?

We saw lots of girls wearing them one day in March (I think?) when we were there and were wondering what they were for.

Can't see the link (work filter), but yes, girls wear hakama for graduation ceremony from university, which should be in March since the new school year begins in April.
In earlier times girl students used to wear hakama, like in the manga "haikara san ga tooru".

Back from work. It's not a rental, it's the actual goods.

The kimono-hakama set may also be used in the Seijinshiki (Coming of Age Ceremony). I wanna say that's March 20th, but I could be wrong.

Coming of Age Day is one of those Monday holidays now (second Monday in Jan, starting in year 2000 or so). It used to always be Jan 15. When we lived in Tokyo 1990-1997, there were no Monday Holidays and no daylight savings time, and seemed sort of quaint. Then when we moved back in 2001, the new Monday holidays seemed sort of "un-Japanese" to me.

March 20 or 21 would be the vernal equinox, and it wouldn't do to make that a Monday Holiday, and I don't think they did.

so,... since we were there in march, I wonder why they were dressed like that then? Do you think it was for graduation? or...?

yes, I think it was for graduation events in March (the hakama outfit)

the Coming of Age day outfit is the furisode kimono (fancy style with long sleeves for unmarried women, bright, bright colors, silk or silk-like, intricate all over designs, often rented I think)

both are really cool

I like all kinds of dolls in kimono

Last summer I bought a yukata and the stuff for Samamtha (age 11 then). It was nice but in retrospect a crazy purchase, over US$500 from an old line dept store, nice service, nice stuff (yukata, summer obi belt, shoes, misc hair things, some ties and stuff, and we could easily have spent much more). Then she did not really like the traditional obi belt, because it wasn't pre-tied, so I hunted around the teen areas of Shibuya and got a pre-tied belt (the bow is separate and hooks on the back). Lots of trendy (& much cheaper) looks there, but the fabrics were less nice.

you know how Build-A-Bear is popular here? there were so many similar things in Tokyo last summer, kimono style outfits for different size stuffed bears, little rain coat sets, much cute stuff.

BTW, thank you again for all you do and have done for dolls - it is truly incredible (and some fun too, I hope more fun than *%$*&!)

now I'm remembering what Minako said once about her own Coming of Age day kimono - I think her mother picked it out and they didn't agree about how much black should be in it. (because the mostly black formal kimono with restrained designs at the bottom are like mother of the bride outfits, so not "right" for young singles).

I think I have it straight now! :D (now if I can just get all my obi types and bow types straight! *L*!)
I think those pretied obis are going to be my savior for a little while until I can learn to tie a proper bow. But I'd like to learn! I'm wondering if there is a kisuke class in LA somewhere, being that there is little tokyo and severa cultural museums, etc... I dunno. that would be nice!

what I think is adorable is the chiwawa kimonos! and cat kimonos! :D

it sounds a lot like the coming of age kimonos are kinda like your wedding dress in western areas... ie, that you spend several thousand dollars on it, you only wear it once, and the design is of debate between mother and daughter. lol.
