I dunno! ^_^ her real name was "bess" so obviously us calling her mee maw didnt have anything to do with her name..! :)

I call my grandmother Mammaw and my grandfather Pappaw. It might be souothern, but I believe it has its origins in France. In the first season of Star Trek: The Next generation, back when they still tried to pass Jean-Luc Picard off as a French guy, despite his English accent, he used French words fairly often. And one of them was spoken when he saw a vision of his grandmother. Although the accent was on the second syllable instead of the first, it was the same word as the one I use for my grandmother: Mammaw. And MeeMaw sounds like a variation on it. So my guess is that we're all speaking French and don't know it. :)

hrm, I wonder if it comes from my grandmother, or from the area where I was brought up. (ie did she say "call me meemaw" at some point, or did we call her that because of where we were brought up. I was brought up in port city of Charleston, which does have some french influence in cuisine and such from way back when (think new orleans a tiny tiny bit.) but my grandmother was from tennesee I think originally and I dont think you'll find any french there! but then, it could be something from several generations back for all I know! :)

I live in Tennessee, as does my grandmother. Might be more French influence here than we realize.

Oooooo interesting..that might be! Though I know Matthew's family doesn't have French roots. The grandmother that my li newphew refers to as Memaw is Norwegian (or 2nd generation at least) Maybe it's a European thing in general or something (the south seems to have heavy European influence in a lot of the words they use)? Or maybe it's just a word lots of lil kids come up with..He calls his other grandmother (Matthew's mum) Mimi (which apparently he made up himself) that is my personal favorite!
