assaultdoor prefers to play with a USB controller, but most of the games will let you map the buttons to the keyboard, which is how I played Chrono Trigger. For turn-based RPGs like that, which aren't dependent on reflexes, I think the keyboard is fine, especially since the emulators let you customize which keys to use. Generally you just have to download the emulator program and the ROM (the game), and occasionally a translation or other patch file to make it work properly ... Are you on Windows or Mac?
