Chinatown, Bradbury Bldg
May. 6th, 2009 08:16 pmI posted WIP on my Lia wig and Lia sword on HCC.

"So many sights to see so wake up like an early birdie
And we'll get a head start on the day
Oh stained-glass skyways and crowded 6 lane highways
If I look back when I begin to leave, will they remember me? "
~ Early Birdie - Owl City
I got up a bit early this morning, had my tea (black chinese with rose petals) and got my errands done. I had to meet Mitch in LA to pick up some papers, so we decided to have lunch and go visit a building I've been wanting to see for a while.
To waste some time inbetween my morning errands and lunch, I went by Chinatown. I'd been meaning to go and just sit for a bit for a couple months, but hadn't found the time. I got a chicken steamed bun and a cream horn and a soda and watched some old men play chess. Good way to start the day.

On the way to meet Mitch:

This (all pictures below) is the Bradbury Bldg. (1893). ( Wikipedia entry ). I've lived in the LA area for a while and had never even been aware of this building. It's a bit nondescript from the outside, but the inside,.... it is breathtaking. It has a rather creepy history, too... and perhaps best of all, was used pretty extensively in Blade Runner.
I was looking at some steampunk pages the other day and by accident came across a page about this building. I then gave Mitch the "O_O" face and asked him why he hadn't informed me of this before. ha ha.
Today I really needed a mental break, so exploring LA a bit was just the thing.

"This wrought-iron was executed in France and displayed at the Chicago World's Fair before being installed in the building. They are supposed to give the illusion of hanging vegetation."

Date: 2009-05-07 03:51 pm (UTC)There is a question about the building I can not find an answer to.
If you watch the opening credits to "Ray Bradbury Presents" it looks like his office is in the Bradbury building. He rides up in an open elevator. Is it really there?
No, I don't expect you to know. Just sharing. :)
