A short interview with me from the sweet ladies at Chicagoanimators.com. Watch me twirl nervously. XD

Someone video-taped me doing a sketch of Danger Kitty for them in their sketchbook (requested)
Look, you can see my deathgrip!

It only hurts when I do really small tight drawings for extended periods (like overtime) :) but this is why I have hand problems sometimes. I've tried a bit to retrain myself, but... it's like learning to draw all over again, so I gave up.

I know what you mean, I have a heavy drawing hand too (the studio thinks I'm a freak for the rate I wear down my stylus nibs) but thats nothing in comparison! Take care of those fingers! ;)

Cute!

And I used to have a similar grip. I don't know how I managed to change it but I have. It could be with help from learning to knit at the same time. Heh.

I see what you mean about death grip! My fingers do that after drawing for a long time..then my finger starts to feel all springy o_O OHhh thanks for mentioning Chicagoanimators.com, I'll have to check out that site since I'm kinda near Chicago. I'm assuming they are based out of there or something? *checks out forum*

Were you using a pen to draw that? How did you manage not ot screw it up? I couldn't quite tell but was there a pencil sketch underneath to guide you?

yes, it's a pen, I like using a pen for quick sketches.
there is a light blue pencil rough sketch underneath, yup yup! :)
but the only reason I used a blue pencil to do a rough sketch first is because this was someone's "sketchbook" and I wanted it to be a little more informed than something I'd rough sketch with a pen normally. since the convention is that people will keep this sketchbook with one image by each artist, etc... I wanted it to be nicer.

but with pen, if you don't do a rough sketch underneath,... basically, you have to be ok with mistakes, or you have to use it to do your rough and be ok with some of that rough showing through. that's not always a bad thing. :) it's kinda freeing in a way, if you're ok with that.

I'm trying to do exercises when I feel bad... but other than that... I just try to go "I'm sorry I can't do XYZ" when I'm afraid that it will be too hard on my hand.

you're right though... have to be careful!!

mmm... also you can see with important parts like the face that I kinda ghost the paper a bit before putting down a heavy line.

Yeah I understand, if I were in your position and only equiped with a pen i'd probablly be tearing pages out left, right and centre, or asking the person to come back after knowing the sketch you left them with is not how I wanted it because I had to rush it.
Now that I look again, I can see your blue sketch. It's interesting to know how aclaimed artists tackle sketching for a stanger who's standing infront of them at a convention.
You did seem to take more time and presision on doing the face.

Also, your very pretty on camera.

Sketching AND being recorded... death grip would be the least of my problems! aaaaaggggh.

Of course, I suck at sketches and you so do not! Nice work!

(I avoid sketches, if at all possible. My sketch horror story: every now and then one just totally sucks and cannot be fixed save by tearing out a page--which I should just do! Anyway, these books get passed around to everyone... One fears what fellow artists would say, much less if it got into an art director's hands! Well, one notable dog I created was for a guy who actually became one of my art directors. He must have had no sense, since he continued to hire me, but... gah!!!) *__*

well, I do have pencils with me but. (a) I think pen is totally fine , it keeps things from getting too niggly .. and (b) I hate to keep sharpening it...

and I think you'll find that most artists try to spend about 2-4 minutes on free sketches if they can, because they don't want to ignore their other customers. (at conventions I mean) so, pen is perfect! :)

thankyouuuuuu

even really famous artists dont do their best work in someone's sketchbook, it's on the fly and meant to be done quickly. I mean look up some quick convention sketches done by "j. scott campbell" or "mike mignola". Both are fabulous and well known artists, but their convention sketches are loose and a lil wonky just like all of us.

I hope that most people would judge my art by what I choose to feature, and what I do on the job,... so I'm not too worried.

I've drawn this way ever since I can remember, so my hand's used to it. it only gets bad when I have to do small tight drawings for extended periods. so I usually won't do that.
