FYI,,, I'm not going to be online for the next couple of days, except extremely briefly. I have to get some work done. Please call me (phone) if you need me.

Nothing like watching Pride and Predjudice to make all the crap dissappear. I'm such a sap.

(Obviously if anyone would like to recommend some GREAT romantic Colin Firth movies (besides Bridget Jones), or any other sappy romances that are as good as Pride&P, I would love to entertain your recommendations! ) mmmm... men with nifty coats and ladies in frothy lace. Standoffish men who secretly are desperately in love with you the whole time and stare meaningfully a lot. YEAY!

There's a very good one where he is a roguish player called "Valmont" that you might be interested in. Time period piece and Firth looking good :)He's also in the original "Fever Pitch" too.

Emma was romantic and had a standoffish man in a nifty coat who was secretly in love. It's a great romantic movie.

Another Jane Austin book turned movie: "Sense and Sensability" for nice Hugh Grant and veeery nice Alan Rickman. Lyn and I ADORE this movie. Oooh and Kenneth Branaugh's version of Shakespeare's "Much Ado about Nothing" definately is one of my favorite romantic movies.

We should do a "Hot British Men" marathon some day!!

The Importance of Being Earnest. Includes Colin Firth, I do believe, and nifty coats and frothy lace.

Nothing says lovin' like Colin Firth (P&P's wet shirt scene *squee*).
Have you seen "Girl With a Pearl Earring?" It's not fluffy cuteness, but you get to see Colin all smoldery and brooding. Niiiice.

P&P is my comfort watching too - it never fails to make me all gooey and happy. :D Apart from everything mentioned above, try the BBC period drama (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0000897EC/qid=1113908649/sr=8-1/ref=pd_csp_1/104-1623073-0678315?v=glance&s=dvd&n=507846) 'Daniel Deronda', starring the lovely man in my icon. It's one of the most beautifully filmed, and so rich and poignant.

Oh, and there was a recent dramatisation (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0007N1BBC/qid=1113908590/sr=8-1/ref=pd_ka_0/202-9557214-1725425) of 'North and South', which is a little bit more gritty since it's set in an industrial northern town, but the main man SMOULDERS in it (lots of meaningful staring) and the ending is just as good. And he has a yummy northern accent, and fabulous suits and a coat. It's only just been released to DVD here, so you might have to wait a while before it appears on your shores. :)

There was a fantastic version (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/6305907145/qid=1113908335/sr=8-1/ref=pd_csp_1/104-1623073-0678315?v=glance&s=dvd&n=507846) of 'Mansfield Park' (also written by Austen, but the film is more loosely based on it) that I personally really enjoyed. There's a BBC miniseries, but I didn't enjoy it as much.

(The amazon reviews for those titles contain MASSIVE spoilers, so definitely don't read them!)

Sharpe and Horatio Hornblower are both longer series, and so there are lots more DVDs out, but they're good for eye candy (helloooo younger!Sean Bean and Ioan Gruffudd) though without very many women in them.

I was just about to mention a number of those.

Daniel Deronda and Hornblower are both fabulous. The costuming in Deronda is so beautiful.. I love period drama - so great for when you want to feel girly and squishy (although Hornblower is less of a girly series and more of a really well done period naval drama/adventure series -ie not so much romance...-)

I would agree with the Mansfield Park review from Yato above.

I don't know how Vanity Fair turned out (with Reese Witherspoon), but it's on my queue of things to see.

Also - Dangerous Beauty, Elizabeth, Amadeus -- all very entertaining period stuff.

purely for the masterful John Malkovich, I rewatched my favorite movie 2 nights ago, 'Dangerous Liaisons'... fluffy costumes galore. I could watch it a million times & never be bored.

For period silliness, 'Much Ado About Nothing'. Need to pull that one out again...

Those are what hop to mind quickly in my DVD collection that are Period Costumey Goodness & Romantic in Nature (even tho DL is very twisted, muahaha!)

There's not much better then P & P. *sigh*
The alternatives that I could think of have already been mentioned. ^^ But if you ever get a chance to see a BBC series called "The House of Elliot" check it out. It's not from the same period, but it's about two sisters that were designers, so it would appeal to the seamstress in you.
It used to be on years ago, and I've not seen it since, but the costumes were so beautiful, and it was a really interesting story. ^^

I used to watch it on A & E.

You might want to give "Hope Springs" a try. Colin Firth, Heather Graham, and Minni Driver. It wasn't spectacular, but I thought it was cute. :}

I love your work, Amiee!
